Description | GERMANY / Berlin / November 1989 / Some weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many East German visited the painted Wall at the West Berlin. So-called wall woodpeckers (Mauerspechte) take a piece of Wall as souvenir, behind Reichstagsgebaeude. .The Berlin Wall was built by the border police and the East German army (NVA) at night on 12 to 13 August 1961. The former GDR border encircled West Berlin with a length of 160 kilometres. The border installation with reinforced concrete wall, control road, lighting installation, death strip and hinterland wall divided the city 28 years.
